Public Accounts Committee publishes report on civil legal aid

In a report released following the National Audit Office (NAO) report on civil legal aid after LASPO, the Public Accounts Committee criticised the Ministry of Justice for failing to research and evaluate the potential impact of the reforms to the system before they were introduced. Committee chair Margaret Hodge MP said it was ‘deeply disturbing’ that reforms were based not on evidence but on an objective to cut costs as quickly as possible. A report from the Justice Select Committee on civil legal aid is expected shortly.
